Photo Shoot

4.27.2009

I had the help of two great photographers this weekend, Chase Allgood and Rebecca Steele, to take some pictures of my thesis garments in use.

Chase shot film, which is being developed, and Rebecca took the digital pics which I am posting today. Here is a small bit of writing from my thesis paper on the pieces,

“[t]his line of smocks takes the material and the idea of open design a step further, linking it directly to the personal and practical nature of clothing. Functional yet ridiculous, this garment acts as a design prototype and simultaneously a parody on the design world’s obsession with efficiency. Covered in chalkboard paint, the smock becomes a wearable system of note taking. As an idea comes to the wearer, he/she is able to immediately write it down on the surface of their smock and then continue working. Unlike writing a “to do” list in a notebook and setting it aside, the notes made on the front of the smock are hard to forget and never misplaced.”

The smock was so stiff from the 5 or so layers of paint I applied to it I could hardly move! The garment really transformed into an oppressive, cage-like thing which certainly works with the concept- but was definitely a surprise. I am really interested in how all the elements of the display are going to come together, the cheeriness of the houseplant props will provide a good counterpoint to how dark and strange these garments are.

More pictures from Chase later this week.

Hey,

been reading about your thesis work from your blog, and sounds really interesting. Any chance of a... (oh dear, what's the word in english...) short version to be read here when it's done?

(I'm a bit jealous of your fig tree... but I love to eat them too! Fig jam with brie on ciabatta... best thing ever!)
