Upright!

4.25.2009

I happy to report that my paper-houseplants actually stand up! There was a tiny bit of doubt in my mind, but the first one I cut out is actually very stable.

I love the idea that these props could blend into a domestic space, mingling with living plants, piles of newspapers, books, the stuff of everyday clutter....
The more I look at contemporary design (the images and article for the Milan Design Fair have been especially interesting) it seems as if there is no end to what can be designed in our lives.

A 'designed' houseplant seems very funny to me. Plants are just as designed (cultivated) as any object, and how we choose to arrange them adds another element into that manipulation. I am interested in that line between what is considered natural and what is thought of as artificial. Sometimes artificial objects are even MORE beautiful or interesting than the originals....

One of these days, I am going to hire a professional photo-stylist to arrange these objects and have someone take some REAL photos!

These turned out just as awesome as I imagined. I hope you keep them up in your space year-round -- like you said, mixed in with real plants.

Designing nature and using the artificial to better the natural is why I am madly in love with Gothic revival gardens. They were so intricately contrived to emphasise nature.

The idea of these paper houseplants is super interesting, from their basic existence in living clutter to silly science fiction ideas of smooth-cornered spaceship cubicles with just these as their bit of green.

Sorry, this is a silly long comment, but these just got my brain working.

Good thoughts! I am hoping to make collection of them and see how they function in another persons' space- I will have to check out Gothic Revival gardens- super interesting!

Ooh, the test of removing work from it's originating environment! Luck!

'Gothic : 400 years of excess horror evil and ruin' has a nice chapter on them, drawing parallels between landscaping and set design.

Chelsea...these are amazing!!!
If you ever open a little shop and sell these, I'd be your first customer. The idea is brilliant and the colors are just gorgeous.
